Production: Fruit of a slow maceration of fruits and spices that, wisely combined with caramelized sugar and rum, result in a sweet rum with a unique and intense flavor.
Tradition: This traditional liqueur was born in the 19th century as a result of commercial exchanges between Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Mallorca. Its elaboration is based on a long process of maceration of exotic fruits typical of the island of Mallorca, in sugar cane alcohol.
It is the basis of the traditional “rebentat” coffee in Mallorca and cannot be missing in any bar on the island.
There are various theories about the origin of this tradition. One of them says that officials of the Spanish colonies in Cuba gave workers coffee with rum to make them perform better at work and counteract the tropical heat. Another theory, which has more followers, says that during the colonial wars in Cuba, the Spanish drank coffee with rum or brandy to have more courage in battle (in old Spanish “corajillo”).
Consumption tips: To drink alone or accompanied by coffee (carajillo).
